The lifeboat launched to a
report of two female swimmers in difficulties off Herne Bay.
On arrival the swimmers,
aged 16 and 17, were found 1/4 mile off the Kings Hall, with a Council
lifeguard on a surf canoe in attendance. Although the lifeguard had been
unable to take the girls ashore, he had been able to use his radio to
summon assistance, and stayed with them to reassure them that help was on
its way.
Both the girls were brought
aboard the lifeboat and placed in a survival bag, as one of them was
showing the effects of cold. An ambulance was also requested to meet the
lifeboat on arrival.
As with the call earlier
in the week, the lifeguard and his canoe were also brought aboard the
lifeboat, to save him a long row back against the fresh breeze.
Both casualties were landed ashore at Herne Bay
harbour, with Herne Bay Coastguard in attendance, to await the
ambulance.
Both girls had been swimming with friends when they
got swept under the pier by the tide. They were able to hang on to the
pier legs for a while, but then got carried out by the strong ebb
tide.
