The lifeboat launched following a report of several canoes possibly in difficulties 200 yards off Long Rock beach, Swalecliffe.

On arrival the lifeboat found a Canadian -type canoe capsized with one person in the water, and two kayaks trying to tow him back to shore.

The man and his canoe were brought aboard the lifeboat, and taken back to the beach near Tankerton Bay Sailing Club, from where he had set out earlier.

The two kayaks were able to make their own way ashore.
