The lifeboat launched to assist a yacht aground in
the vicinity if the Ham Gat Buoy, at the entrance to the Swale. The lone
occupant had reported that the yacht was taking water, had suffered
engine failure, and total electrical failure. He did however have a
torch, which he would use to attract the attention of the lifeboat as it
approached.
The lifeboat arrived at the reported position at 2041,
and began searching for the unlit yacht. It was eventually found at 2057,
now afloat and under sail, one mile SE of Shell Ness. A crewman was put
aboard to check for leaks, but all appeared well.
A tow was offered, but declined, the skipper being
happy to continue to Faversham Creek under sail alone.
The lifeboat escorted the yacht into the Swale
channel, before returning to station.
