Details Thames Coastguard requested the lifeboat to launch to a broken down speedboat half a mile east of the Shivering Sand Towers, eight miles offshore. Although the occupants of the speedboat had managed to start an emergency outboard engine progress was slow and the lifeboat took the craft in tow for Whitstable. The speedboat, which had suffered electrical failure and its occupants were landed ashore at the harbour ramp where a lifeboat shore party and the Herne Bay Mobile Coastguard Unit were waiting.
